Calculate your ideal weight by height using 4 different formulas. See healthy weight range and BMI. Free ideal weight calculator. No signup.
There is no single ideal weight — there is a healthy range. Four major ideal weight formulas (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi) give different results for the same height, and all have limitations. Our calculator shows all four alongside your healthy BMI weight range so you have a realistic picture of what healthy looks like for your frame.
Robinson formula (1983): most commonly cited. Devine formula (1974): originally for medication dosing. Miller formula (1983): tends lower than Robinson. Hamwi formula (1964): oldest, uses frame size concept. All formulas were developed from limited population samples and do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. Use as a rough reference not a target.
A single ideal weight implies everyone of the same height should weigh the same — clearly false. Two people at 5 feet 8 inches with identical BMI can have very different health profiles based on muscle mass, body fat distribution, and genetics. The healthy BMI range of 18.5-24.9 gives a weight range of 20-30 lbs for most heights — that range is more useful than a single ideal number.
For a 5 foot 4 inch woman: healthy BMI range of 18.5-24.9 corresponds to 108-145 lbs. Ideal weight formulas suggest 120-128 lbs as a reference point. Frame size matters — small frame at the lower end, large frame at the higher end. Focus on health markers over a specific number.
For a 5 foot 10 inch man: healthy BMI range corresponds to 130-174 lbs. Ideal weight formulas suggest 166 lbs as reference. Athletic men at 5 foot 10 with significant muscle mass may weigh 180-200 lbs at low body fat — technically overweight BMI but metabolically healthy. Body composition matters more than scale weight.
Neither is highly accurate for individuals — both are population-level screening tools with significant limitations. Body fat percentage is more meaningful than either. Waist circumference is a better predictor of metabolic disease risk than BMI or ideal weight. Use these tools for general awareness not precise health targets.
