Not required but often helpful: France, Spain, Germany (US license accepted but IDP translation helps), Australia (US license valid up to 3 months), Canada and Mexico (US license valid). Only two organizations legally issue IDPs in the US: AAA (American Automobile Association): $20, available at local AAA offices or by mail, requires 2 passport photos and your driver's license. AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance): similar process and cost. WARNING: Any other organization selling IDPs is a scam — these are not legally valid. Processing is immediate in person at AAA office. By mail takes 7-10 days. Valid for 1 year from issue date.

Italy: IDP is technically required for non-EU license holders though often not enforced. Eastern Europe most countries: IDP strongly recommended and sometimes required. Always carry both your US license and IDP together — IDP is not valid without your actual driver's license.
